Rumpelstiltskin

image

Apologies for the long silence – again. Busy (ness) got in the way – No really!

I did keep clicking photos (albeit sneakily) of my little reader reading her books. Here’s an update about the classic called Rumpelstiltskin.

I don’t really want to write about the story – it is detailed in here and in many other online sites.

The five year old mind concluded that the daddy was not nice because he lied about what his daughter can do.  It seemed Mini was a bit confused at places and asked many questions. Most of all – she loved the name Rumpelstiltskin.

Mister Magnolia – Quentin Blake

mister

A delightful classic book that needs no introduction. If you have a child around 3 years or need to buy a present for a child of this age, I would recommend this book.

Age : 3-4 years

A lovely picture book by the illustrator of the Roald Dahl books, Quentin Blake.  We have this book for the last 3 years and Mini still loves to pick it up and read it. The rhyme is so funny and witty that I hear giggles soon after she starts reading. Mini loves the silliness and the tragedy of ‘poor’ Mr Magnolia, who just has one boot.
Mr Magnolia has only one boot.
He has an old trumpet
that goes rooty-toot—
And two lovely sisters
who play on the flute—
But Mr Magnolia has only one boot.
A very happy character, Mister Magnolia continues to have fun despite a missing boot. A lovely and light-hearted  piece that ends happily. He gets another boot that does not match his other one but makes him really happy nevertheless.
The book is a delight with lovely rhyming pattern and always brings a smile to our faces.

First encyclopedia of science

The back of the book

Mini is very fond of Usborne books. I think she enjoys the illustrations that accompany each and every Usborne book.

The first Encyclopedia of science is a lovely way to open the mind of a five year old to the world of science. The simple language and the photos make it interesting and most importantly generate that all important interest towards the subject.

If you have a child around 4-6 years, I would recommend that you get this book. There are many science books around and this may not be the best but definitely the simplest.

Before I go – this is how the front of the book looks like 🙂

Alfie gives a hand by Shirley Hughes

image

Mini was reading Alfie gives a hand by Shirley Hughes this morning. It is part of her school curricula.

A story about shy Alfie who, even though is excited about Bernard’s Birthday party is apprehensive about going there alone. A delightful story about how Alfie helps his friend and beats shyness.

Mini loved the story. The simple words and beautiful illustration made is easy for her to read.

Lovely book with the scope to discuss about – Bernard’s behaviour, shyness, helping others, birthday party and so on.

I would give it a 4.5/5

thanks for passing by..

Three Billy Goats Gruff

Mini and her classmates enacted this story in her Reception class assembly, last year. It was a massive success. They read the book in school, enjoyed it and understood the story well enough to then act it out.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff is a traditional tale originating in Norway. The book  can be read in the silly voice in a sing-song pattern. Beautiful story about how the three little goats outwit the greedy troll and manages to cross the bridge. This story can evoke discussions and support learning in different ways.

Mini says – One of my favourite stories.

Mumma says – A must read for pre-schoolers or beginners .. 5/5

The World of Dinosaurs – Usborne Flap Book

Name – See inside the world of Dinosaurs

Author – Alex Firth; Illustrator – Peter Scott

Mini is  not a big fan of Dinosaurs – yet. We are very lucky to live within an hours’ drive of the Natural History Museum, London, UK. The museum has a huge section dedicated to Dinosaurs. Every year, for the last three years, I have taken Mini to see the Dinosaurs (along with the other attractions of course), in the Museum. Finally, I bought this book (from the Museum store, probably paid more than normal price) to get Mini to learn about these pre-historic beasts.

The flaps made things a bit easy for an otherwise unpopular topic. She has gained significant knowledge about the different types of bones, what they ate and how they ate. Mini does spend a lot of time, quietly, turning the flaps over and reading.

Mini says – Dinosaurs are so big and I like the Tricerotops. I like the book a lot.

Mumma says – Good illustrations and an interesting read. Mini might like the book a bit more next year when she’s a year older.
